Block Shop Studio is the home of Block Shop’s custom design projects and collaborations. Citing Anni Albers’s conceit of textiles as art, our custom work—with clients from Ace Hotels to Heath Ceramics—explores the joyful intersection of utility and decoration, and celebrates the artistry of the handmade.
RACHEL COMEY | FRAMED WOODBLOCK PRINTS
Our first edition of woodblock prints comes from our sketchbooks documenting the architectural motifs of the beloved Art Deco movie palaces of India and downtown Los Angeles, our two far-flung homes. We launched our prints in conjunction with Rachel Comey at her Melrose Place store, designed by architect Linda Taalman. The overlap between Block Shop’s geometric prints and Comey’s striking use of texture and shape in her modern silhouettes made for a natural partnership between the two women-run businesses.
ACE HOTEL & SWIM CLUB | MURAL
Block Shop was commissioned to hand paint a mural on the 80-foot long Commune Wall at the Ace Hotel Palm Springs. Tasked with creating something in our signature geometric vernacular that also felt Palm Springs, we turned to one of our favorite LA writers, Eve Babitz, for inspiration. The mural intents to capture that specific flavor of ennui so particular to summer in the desert that Babitz describes in her short story Palm Springs. It took us five days to paint the mural, which has since become a backdrop sensation with thousands of posts on Instagram.
HEATH CERAMICS | LINEN HAND BLOCK PRINTED NAPKINS AND RUNNERS
Our hand block printed table linens are an exclusive collaboration with iconic California pottery and homewares company Heath Ceramics. Inspired by Heath’s beautiful natural palette and printed in our signature bold geometries, the napkins and runners pair perfectly with Heath’s beloved earthy stoneware. We continue to produce designs exclusively for Heath, and look forward to our A/W collection. Our table linens are available in all their stores, as well as on our website.
LOC ARCHITECTS | UPHOLSTERY DESIGN FOR DAYBED
Block Shop collaborated with award-winning husband/wife architecture firm, LOC Architects, to create the upholstery design for their George Nelson-inspired plywood daybed. The daybed was our first experiment in furniture, and debuted at our LA’s Spring 2017 design show, Intro LA, along with a custom installation of large-scale wall hangings. Custom yardage on handwoven khadi.
MAST BROTHERS CHOCOLATE | WRAPPER DESIGN
Block shop designed a collection of wrappers in our signature patterns for MAST Brothers Chocolate city series. Each flavor was made in collaboration with beloved Los Angeles chefs designed to represent the unique flavors of the city, from miso to horchata. The chocolate, wrappers, and wrapping were all created by hand here in LA, and launched at MAST’s LA factory party.
KISMET LOS ANGELES | HAND BLOCK PRINTED NAPKINS FOR RESTAURANT
Block Shop produced custom napkins for award-winning Los Angeles restaurant Kismet, run by our friends chefs Sara Kramer and Sarah Hymanson, with graphic design by Claire Hungerford of Commune Design. The restaurant’s inventive menu and thoughtful interior design represent a collaboration of the Eastside zeitgeist, where food and design come together. The napkins were printed by hand by our team in Bagru, India.
OJAI RANCHO INN | FOOT BLANKETS Our favorite weekend getaway is the Ojai Rancho Inn, a bohemian-chic motel beloved for showcasing contemporary California design, and the crown jewel of the Shelter Social Club hotel group. We designed these ochre and pink kantha blankets to withstand wear and tear and complement the 70’s vibe and wooden interiors of the Inn. Block Shop looks forward to a future collaboration for their upcoming desert property in Twentynine Palms. Hand block printed quilted kantha blankets, starting at $80 wholesale.
PAPER CHASE PRESS | FOLDED CARDS
Block Shop works with Paper Chase Press for custom printing on all of our paper goods. We launched a collaboration together in Spring of 2015, featuring our watercolor textile sketches printed on Paper Chase’s heavy card stock.
